Description and Reader Names: In this class we will write into our longing, appreciation and wonder about this precious
and mysterious planet. We will offer writing samples from poets and other writers who
delve into and underscore the transcendent beauty of Nature as well as their concern for
its ecosystems and sustainability. We all have a stake in this place, but our views and expressions
about it will be entirely unique. Where do you contact nature most authentically?
What is your path in? How do you let Nature reach you? What has been a guiding
force of Nature in your life? What brings you to an ecological consciousness? Creative
exercises and prompts will guide you in this ongoing conversation about the planet we
inhabit. All genres and writing levels welcome. Returning students will note an expanded
meeting time-2 ½ hrs.
Always the procreant urge of the world. ~Walt Whitman

Facilitators: Laurie Arnold-McMillan is a writer and nurse who found passion as a certified therapeutic writing instructor. She
facilitates creative and therapeutic writing workshops in settings such as: art galleries, libraries, hospitals, nature
centers, schools, yoga centers, and churches. The transformative nature of writing and group process allows people an
opportunity to find their treasured untold stories and new works still taking form. She encourages people through
exercises, discussion, and a supportive environment to develop inner confidence that strengthens voice and builds a
sense of community in a workshop. Laurie’s published in: Healing Muse, Loyalhanna Review, RN Magazine, Voices in
the Attic and Dionnes's Story and is the founding member of the Pittsburgh Writers’ Studio and a member of Madwomen
in the Attic’s poetry workshops.
Sheila Kelly is a retired psychotherapist who received her M.A. in Psychology at Duquesne University. She has volunteered
with gifted middle school writers for a decade and published their best writing in the annual, St. Bede's Quill.
Sheila believes that a writing practice entails much more than the act of putting pen to paper. It means building and
nurturing a community of writers. A published poet, she is a member and regular facilitator of the Pittsburgh Writers'
Studio, as well as a member of the Pittsburgh Poetry Exchange and the Madwomen in the Attic poetry workshops.
Three of Sheila's plays received staged readings at the 2009 Pittsburgh Three Rivers Arts Festival.
