Description and Reader Names: Ekphrasis – Writing to Art

Ekphrasis or ecphrasis is the graphic, often dramatic, description of a visual work of art. The word comes from the Greek ek and phrasis, ‘out’ and ‘speak’ respectively, verb ekphrazein, to proclaim or call an inanimate object by name. – Wikipedia

Initially, ekphrasis was a term and experience taught to Greek students. Ekphrasis was a way of bringing the experience of an object to a listener or reader through highly detailed descriptive writing. It strives to record what the eye may not see initially. Ekphrasis was one of the last exercises students were taught. The true use of ekphrasis was to share the emotional experience and content with someone who had never encountered the work in question. The student of ekphrasis was encouraged to lend their attention not only to the qualities immediately available in an object, but to make efforts to embody qualities beyond the physical aspects of the work they were observing. – Ryan Welsh

The Art Lending Collection
opened in October 2013 as part of the Carnegie International. It features works by the artists in the exhibition. These works are permanently gifted to the library and cataloged as part of the library’s collection. The collection also include groups of works that will be chosen and acquired or gifted from collections of several library patrons and local residents with whom Transformazium has established an arts discourse.
