Description and Reader Names: Parsec introduces Young Adult Fantasy Lecture Series !
Parsec, Pittsburgh’s Premier Science Fiction and Fantasy Organization is presenting two
national young adult literature authors in conjunction with Carnegie Mellon University and
Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. Bruce Coville and Tamora Pierce will be
discussing the cultural phenomenon of young adult fantasy fiction at 5 p.m., Sunday, July 27th
at the McConomy Auditorium on the CMU campus
!
Bruce Coville has published over 100 books, which have appeared in over a dozen countries
around the world and sold more than sixteen million copies. Among his most popular titles are
his Unicorn Chronicles series, My Teacher Is an Alien, Aliens Ate My Homework, and the
Magic Shop series.
!
Tamora Pierce has been publishing magical young adult fantasies since the mid-eighties.
Known for her powerful female heroes in a secondary teen world, her first series, The Song of
the Lioness, follows the adventures of Alanna of Trebond in Alanna: The First Adventure
(1983), In the Hand of the Goddess (1984), The Woman Who Rides Like a Man (1986) and
Lioness Rampant (1988). Pierce followed up on this initial success with the popular and wellreceived
Immortals series, the Circle of Magic series and many others.
!
This will be the first of three lectures presented by Parsec, a local 501c3 non-profit
organization celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The lecture is free; a donation will be
appreciated. There will be a young adult fantasy writing workshop led by Pittsburgh author
Jonathan Auxier from 2 to 4 PM prior to the lecture series. Registration is required and a
$10.00 suggested donation.
Free parking is available at CMU’s East Campus Garage.
