Workshop
Fiction
Sandra Gould Ford
Description and Reader Names: A short story is closer to the poem than to the novel, and when it’s very, very short – 1, 2, 2 ½ pages – should be read like a poem. That is slowly. People who like to skip can’t skip in a 3-page story. -- Grace Paley, Sudden Fiction

Flash fictions are complete stories, generally from around 300 to 500 words but some are as short as six words. Writing complete, compelling and satisfying micro stories and postcard fiction is a stimulating challenge and a great exercise in succinctness and making sure that every word counts.

A number of publications seek flash fiction. Esquire magazine holds a flash fiction contest in which the word count is decided by the number of years the magazine has published. National Public Radio requests stories that can be read in three minutes. Flash Fiction has been described as a haiku crossed with a novel.

In this workshop, explore, practice and produce flash fiction.
