Description and Reader Names: As archetype and metaphor, Medusa's story is rich with meaning.

Most people know Medusa as the monstrosity who turned all who looked at her to stone. Few understand that Medusa was a ravishingly beautiful, virgin priestess who was raped in the goddess Athena’s temple. Athena was so angered by the violation of her temple that she punished Medusa by turning the beauty’s locks to snakes, destroying Medusa’s appearance and isolating Medusa by turning all who looked at her to stone. Interestingly, Athena did not punish the rapist, her uncle, the god Poseidon.

Medusa’s story provides opportunities to discuss innocence betrayed, punishment of victims and how some find protection from abuse.

Participants will view a thought-provoking documentary; then explore the ways that Medusa’s experience of punishing the victim and innocence betrayed remains relevant and rich with meaning today.
