Description and Reader Names: Please join noted Kentucky poet Jeff Worley and Pittsburgh's Charlie Brice as they read from their work.
'In A Little Luck, Jeff Worley presents that rarest of commodities—a voice encyclopedic in its attentions, clever, self-aware, and deeply likeable. His descriptions of nature are conversational and illuminative: the moon ‘positions/ itself like a cue ball/ on purple felt’; a bat becomes an ‘aerial hawker . . ./ spending wildly the coin/ of its winter-banked energy.’ The poems interrogate a grown man’s perspective on his lost father and his fading mother. Worley’s humor throughout is dark and smart. I’d give this book to the reader who does not yet realize he loves poetry. -Sandra Beasley, Final Judge, 2012 X.J. Kennedy Prize, Texas Review Press
'This is the best book of poems about Kansas by a native Kansan that I have read since the poems of William Stafford, who, like Worley, found a world there, a Wichita vortex of human experience and mystery. Worley’s range of subject matter and tone is remarkable–brilliantly comic, wise, meditative, celebratory, and deeply sensitive, without sentimentality, to the dark passages of son, lover, and adventurer on the unmapped plains of young manhood. One waits a long time for poetry of such power and emotional precision, and I’m glad I found it.' –B.H. Fairchild, Editors’ Shelf, Ploughshares, Winter 2013-14, on Worley's Driving Late to the Party.
Jeff Worley has published five books, three chapbooks, and has edited a poetry anthology, titled What Comes Down to Us (University Press of Kentucky, 2009). His poems have also appeared widely in magazines in the United States and Canada for the past 35 years, and he is the recipient of numerous awards and honors.
