The Alchemy of Memoir

Our Words, Our Lives

A Memoir Writing Retreat!

Sat. July 18th, 2015 10-2

This is a writing workshop for writers at all levels who are interested in using language to shape memory. If you are working through grief of any kind—whether mourning a loved one, a marriage, a childhood, or anything you’ve had to leave behind, the workshop might be especially helpful.

What do you most want to write about but fear you don’t know where to start? What form will your memories take? Poems? Stories? Written meditations?

Our workshop will help you amplify and gain trust in your own voice and direction with the written word. We emphasize not only fun creative in- class exercises, but the process of developing a sense of a writer’s community. That’s where the magic comes in; when we gain trust in each other’s witnessing of our words and lives.

Participants can expect guided reading and discussion, memory exercises, open writing time and workshopping freewrites. Our focus will be for you to generate many writing samples that you can continue at home.

You simply begin where you are. You can be a much- published writer or someone who has never written much at all. This is a fun, creative, inspiring day designed to ignite and re-ignite your passion for the stories you have to tell.

Bring a Notebook and a bag lunch. Refreshments served.

Facilitators: Jane McCafferty and Laurie McMillan are writers and co-founders of the Pittsburgh Memoir Project.
