Description and Reader Names: The Welsh poet, playwright, novelist, and librettist Gwyneth Lewis will be reading in the English Department on the afternoon of Monday, October 29, as part of a visit jointly sponsored by the Honors College, the Pittsburgh Contemporary Writers Series, and the Department of English. The reading will be held from 4:30 to 6 in 501 and will be followed by a reception.

Ms. Lewis was Wales's inaugural National Poet and this year was the winner of that country's prestigious Vale of Glamorgan Eisteddfod. Her work, which often employs rhyme and meter, has the telegraphic mysteriousness of Emily DIckinson and at times the oracular power of the ancient epics. She's also the author of Clytemnestra, a play based on the Oresteia, and The Meat Tree, a novelistic reworking of the fourth branch of the Welsh epic the Mabinogion.
